THE LIGHT
To the casual glance it seemed enough
To the connoisseur the light, perfect
Shadows falling at right places
Flaming bright with dark embraces
A solitary candle greets the moon
Brightening the sands of coromandel
Yet brighter still is the wandering gaze
Cast beyond the tallow’d blaze
What pray brought this distraction
A violet swath on an orange sunset, or
The swoop of a swallow’s nested flight
Under gathering clouds at height
How steadfast the arms that lay
Sphinx like on fashioned wood
How beautiful, the eyes espied
Watching secrets float on the tide
The palms behind exchange green batons
Watchful sentries brimming with gossip
A hundred moons of hustle and bustle
Transformed into melodic lullaby rustles
The observer remains utterly transfixed
An unnoticed speck on distant horizon
Surrounded by the warmth of belonging
And a sense of immeasurable longing
