ANTICIPATION
The large glass walls permitted no secrets
Anxiety writ large on her face
She stopped by an angled mirror
of a Honda perched
A japanese bird on two wheels
No furtive glance did she give around
Confident incognito she thought
She rouged her puckered lips
and applied her mascara
And adjusted her gait
Mesmerised with this candour
while I ate fish and chips
A smile inward appeared
Who might that lucky person be
Causing her to rectify openly
Blemishes that mar the skin
carefully concealed
by a hand practised in the art
of painting over beauty within
I watched silently
Cloth adjusted and readjusted
Stole stowed, disappeared from sight
Unnecessary accessory I suppose
And enter she did and sat
not too far from the doors
A minute or two and out came the phone
Overcome by piquant curiosity
like the taste of tangy mustard
fingers fidgety from anticipation
for the arrival of the unknown
Legs crossed, brows knit
fingertips flying with ferocity
Hurling love notes or abuse equally
demanding justification,
emptiness requiring placation
Alas, I had to hasten, my meal was done
and exit I did, embracing humanity
leaving behind curiosity,
waiting patiently, to see
who would fill the vacancy
