ROMANCING THE SQUARE

Monochromatic hues of dawn's grey
Heavy breathing of clouds at break of day
An invitation to play, Patterned numbers
As ghosts watch in wide wonder
Who disturbs their eternal vigil
A checkerboard square with spaces to fill
Begin, says the electronic announcement
A cautious start, A hesitant commencement
A solo ride, before second twilight
Spills its secrets to a moon shining bright
Interludes of uncertain December shower
Stretches minutes, Shortens the Witching hour
Elevated then to a heightened purpose
Pursed lips join together, nervous
Locking purpose with intense concentration
As the mind is lost in delightful sensation
The numbers game has just begun
Each step yielding a specific outcome
Fingers anticipate every next move
Inking answers like the tongue and groove
Intellect is spoiled with possibility
The body pushed to the precipice of activity
Nail biting pleasure as each column completes
Breath paused resumes to repeat
Intensity rises as steam over coffee
Impetus unbridled, the puzzle unravels softly
Misted eyes concentrate on convoluted flanks
As last gasps disappear, filling in the blanks
Dawns door closes on a love affair
Relishing bliss from romancing the square
